“Sticker heaven - Extraordinary new football pictures that we like, a lot”
SPORT magazine London, May 14, 2010
Stick this
STRIKING GOLD
“Take the classic Panini sticker album, stir in a big bag of mind-warping methamphetamines, shake it well and stand back. The result, we imagine, would look something like this; exploding on to the page and calling itself Football Heroes Gold. There’s no suggestion it was made using mind-warping drugs, of course, but the results are a truly sensational trip.
The brief was simple: take 150 of the greatest players in World Cup history, and invite 45 of the world’s best illustrators to recreate them. Think outside the box, they said - none of that straight shit. The results are spectacular, from Paul Breitner’s hair and Bobby Charlton’s combover from above to Pierluigi Collina’s all-seeing eye and one of many Diego Maradonas dressed up as a cigar-chomping lovechild of Che Guevara and Jabba the Hutt.
“The book is the brainchild of Swiss illustrator Jerzovskaja, who was inspired by the football collector albums of his youth – which had so much more personality and charm than today’s rather bland sticker albums,” explains co-editor Beach (not his real name). “They certainly had a more impressive array of oversized moustaches and flowing mullets.” Amen to that, sir.”
